Mayor Don Grebien Seeks Residents to Serve on Boards, Commissions

Pawtucket’s new Mayor, Don Grebien is seeking letters of interest and availability from city residents who wish to serve on one of the city’s numerous boards and commissions. According to Grebien, “It is an important goal of my administration to make participation in our city government more open to all the residents throughout our diverse community. [...] As part of my transparency pledge, I would like to hear from those who would like the opportunity to serve on our boards and commissions.”

“I am sure there are many talented and committed people who are willing to serve the community but are unsure of how to get started. This opportunity for public service will allow all our residents an important role in shaping the future of their city. [...] Our city boards and commissions also need to reflect the diversity of our community – by culture, gender and every other measure – and I encourage their involvement.”

Anyone serving on a city board or commission is required to be a Pawtucket resident and be at least 18 years old. A full list of the boards and commissions is available on the city’s web site. Letters should be mailed to the Mayor’s Office, Pawtucket City Hall, 137 Roosevelt Ave., Pawtucket, RI 02860. In the body of the letter, state on which board or commission you would like to serve and your general availability.

New Businesses for 2010

Spires Despite the sad news that Kafe Lila closed (in the Grant Building), there are some positives that we would like to focus on:

  • An empty building that is part of Blackstone Landing (Morris Nathanson Design, Exchange St) has been sold to a Providence architectural firm. A construction trailer has taken up residence in the parking lot, and progress will begin soon on this major design complex addition.
  • Shri Yoga Studio has been open for a couple of months on Broad Street, just around the corner from the China Inn. With a wide range of yoga approaches, meditation (in Spanish and English), thoroughly trained teachers, and a terrific attitude, the studio offers many classes including a free community class on Tuesday afternoons.
  • All Nations Food Store will be opening soon on East Avenue (Singer building), across from the old Boys and Girls Club and just a half block from Main St at Sovereign Bank.
  • African National Heritage Media office will open in a space at 255 Main Street, providing newspaper and radio press releases regarding African and American connections.
  • A new storefront decor for Pawtucket Pawn at 255 Main Street was developed by students of Andrew Thurlow, professor of Architecture at Roger Williams University, to explore inexpensive and dramatic displays with modular approaches.
  • Tierra restaurant with its Mediterranean menu, drinks and karaoke bar is now open on Exchange St next to the Pawtucket Times Building. On street and valet parking are available.
